Great shakedown with about 15 people on the water.
Thank You again to all the YPRC volunteers
FROM TIM GAMBLE:
Hey There Yonkeroids. I wanted to extend an invitation and challenge to all of you to join us on the Gowanus Canal this Saturday for our annual fundraising race and party. This is NOT a serious race. Its a real goof and only a few people are really trying to go fast, don't miss out just because you "aren't a racer". Just surviving the paddle is victory enough.
Details are here:
If you want to race yourself and have a canoe or kayak, just show-up. There is NO MINIMUM pledge amount if you bring your own boat, so even if you can't make a donation, please stop by. If you can't be bothered to bring your boat, we would still love to have you come and join us for the party. If you want to use one of the Dredger Canoes please let me know and I can set it up for you if you can make a small pledge amount.
Costumes, the more bizarre the better, are encouraged, but not mandatory. When was the last time you were able to drink beer and have tasty food on the banks of the lovely Gowanus Canal, the coolest super fund site in the USA, and the Venice of Brooklyn. Come on down and check it out before the condos go up and they wont let us block off the street for a party.
Bonnie took some great pictures last year, check them out here:
Location: MONKSVILLE RESERVOIR, NJ
Saturday, June 14th - Full "Strawberry" Moon at YPRC. (Don't attend if you have Friggatriskadekkaphobia !) Actual FM.
PLEASE BE ADVISED, DUE TO ELECTRIC SHUTOFF FOR YPRC REPAIRS, I AM CHANGING THE VENUE FROM THE CLUB TO MONKSVILLE RESERVOIR.
Monksville Reservoir is a great place to paddle day or night and we could all use another beautiful place to paddle! Some of it's features include many upright, in water tree trunks that support wild life, cliffs and rock formations, islands, waterfalls & streams and an historic iron forge & waterwheel which once powered the bellows for the forge. It has a huge parking area & launch (just one of three!) and Kayaking is allowed at night if boats are lit. It is not that far from Yonkers and just a little further (Approx. 5 miles) than going to Lake Sebago, but in the opposite direction off of Rte. 17 (AND NO FEES!). I've seen many ospreys & bald eagles and bears there and once I even saw a bear swim across the lake!
I plan to be up there much earlier like 5:00 or so to paddle around. If you have a radio, Channel 68 will get me.
If not, turn right off the launch & keep paddling 'til you find me.
Launch time - 1900 hrs, or 7:00 PM for most.
YOU MUST WEAR A SECURELY FASTENED PFD & HAVE AT LEAST A WHITE LIGHT (PLUS RED & GREEN IF YOU HAVE.)
BRING STRAWBERRIES TO EAT!
IF YOU HAVE FRIGATRISKADEKAPHOEBIA (fear of Friday the 13th), STAY HOME ;>)
Take I-87/287 over the Chimpanzee Bridge.
Exit 15A for Suffern/Sloatsburg, (DO NOT take Exit 15 for 287 & Rte.17 South to NJ).
Left onto Rt. 17 North. Take 1st jughandle exit on right for Sterling Forest/Ringwood, (Sterling Mine Rd.)
Left at the 1st stop light.
Right at the Little League Field onto Margaret King Ave..
At end, turn left onto Greenwood Lk. Tpke.(Rte. 511) for just a few hundred feet.
Turn right into gate (You should see the lake & dam in front of you at this point).
Procede to the launch & lot.
We will start our Tuesday evening Club paddles on 6/10. Plan to arrive by 530 to be on the water at 6PM. Allow your self more time if you need it. This is not a beginners paddle. We'll be starting Beginners paddles in the near future. Look for information on the listserv.
The paddle is for club members (ps if you haven't paid your dues yet settle up with Kevin our Treasurer )
Please bring food & drink for our famous potluck BBQ afterwards.
We still are with out electricity. There will be some coolers, plan accordingly.
