FREE! Saturday June 18, Noon - 5 pm First Annual Celebration Hosted by Four Hudson River Nonprofits Feel the rhythm of the Hudson beneath your kayak, discover what fish make their home in the river, picnic in a park looking out at the Palisades and more. It’s Yonkers’ first annual Summer Kick-Off Riverfront Festival on Saturday, June 18, noon – 5:00 pm. The free event (including the food!) takes place on the Hudson at Habirshaw Park, 35 Alexander Street. No preregistration needed: visitors sign up for activities on site. Event contact: [email protected] |
There’s something for everyone at the festival hosted by Yonkers’ core four Hudson River
organizations: Beczak Environmental Education Center, Center for the Urban River at
Beczak, Hudson River Riders and Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club. From stand-up paddle
boarding with Hudson River Riders and kayaking with Yonkers Paddling & Rowing Club to
learning how to tie marine knots with Beczak Environmental Education Center and seining (net
fishing) with the Center for the Urban River at Beczak, volunteers from each non-profit will
offer participants a chance to experience what they do best.
“It will be a day of fun for us all,” said Atul Sheffey, board member of Yonkers Paddling &
Rowing Club and one of the key organizers of the event. “We’ll celebrate what makes Yonkers
on the Hudson amazing—our active environmental and paddling community, our diverse
community, and natural beauty. It’s all here.”
Other activities include taking a ride in a 21-foot, 8-person canoe, touring YPRC’s historic
boathouse and neighboring environmental education center, making art from recyclables, and
learning about the life cycle of oysters as well as doing yoga, and enjoying food and music
together.
Community partners of the event: Groundwork Hudson Valley Science Barge, Hudson River
Community Association, Yonkers Public Library and Yonkers Police 4th Precinct.
Thank you, food donors Yonkers Brewery, Manor Bagels, MOMS Organic Market, RISE
Baking and the Pizza Place.
