Steve Blumling and I plan to do our Ninth Annual Manhattan Circumnavigation
on July 16.
On 7/16 the ebb at Hell Gate starts at 11:33 AM.
And, the Full Moon the previous day will "bump up" the normally strong
currents.
(Our rain date will be Sunday 7/17--about an hour later.)
Meet at Pier 40 between 4:30 AM and 5:45 AM.
Pier 40 is located along the Hudson River at Houston Street.
Unload your kayak and gear, then park your car.
Carry or trailer your kayak to the DTBH floating dock.
Launch at 6:45 AM SHARP !!!!
Paddle south on the Hudson River at the end of the ebb cycle and gather
together at South Cove.
Then cross the Battery in tight formation and head toward Brooklyn.
Paddle north on the East River --assisted by a strong flood current.
Take the east channel along Roosevelt Island.
Arrive at Hallets Cove Beach for brunch around 10 AM.
Right next to the Beach is the Socrates Sculpture Garden.
And the Noguchi Museum is just three blocks away.
At 11:33 AM the current at Hell Gate is calm or slack before the ebb.
So, we'll cross the East River by the northern tip of Roosevelt Island.
Then head north on the west side Mill Rock.
And paddle up the Harlem River as it ebbs north into the Hudson.
Stop for a break at Swindlers Cove Park at Dyckman Street on the Harlem
River.
This Park, along with the adjacent Sherman Creek Park, are well worth a
tour.
So is the floating Peter Sharpe Boathouse.
Once back underway, continue paddling north on the Harlem River.
After cruising through Spuyten Duyvil at the north end of Manhattan--
Start paddling south on the Hudson River around 3:15 PM--assisted by a
strong ebb
On the Hudson leg of the trip, Steve will lead the main group of paddlers
(the "express").
This group will get back to Pier 40 around 6 PM
And, I will lead a small "slower" group (the "local") which will get back
about a half hour later.
Back at Pier 40--pack your kayak and gear on your car.
Then some paddlers may want to join family and friends at a Greenwich
Village restaurant
This 30 mile excursion around Manhattan is not a race.
It is a chance for kayakers to socialize, explore, take pictures and
meditate
***** NEW THIS YEAR *****
We are happy to be holding our Manhattan Circ on the same weekend as The
City of Water Day.
Our trip will be a small part of the larger weekend message describing the
many wonderful activities
found on the waters of the NY/NJ Harbor
If you would like to join us, mark your calendar.
And, let me know by back channel email.
