We are very pleased to announce that the name of this event has been officially changed to the Gerry Blackstone Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation in honor of Gerry Blackstone the founder of this event.
We are also very happy to share that the American Canoe Associated awarded the 2018 Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation the “SANCTIONED EVENT OF THE YEAR AWARD” at their annual meeting In September 2018.
We look forward to welcoming you on this annual 30-mile kayak paddle around New York’s Manhattan Island. Launching four groups from the northern end of Manhattan and across the Hudson River in Fort Lee, NJ. Two leisurely paced groups will leave first and then two moderately paced groups thereafter.

From the first Circumnavigation, organized and led by Steve Blumling and Gerry Blackstone in 2004, this event has continuously grown and this year we expect more than 150 kayakers both local and out-of towners. Some of our participants come from distant states and even foreign countries. Sponsored by Yonkers Paddling and Rowing Club since 2014, the paddle has come to represent and celebrate the public’s increasing interaction with a more environmentally healthy New York City waterfront and Hudson River Estuary. The event was covered by the NY Daily News in 2017. http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/kayaking-nyc-article-1.2337057
The Manhattan Kayak Circumnavigation from its start has never been a race, but rather a chance to exercise, meditate, take pictures, socialize, and, to be dazzled by the Manhattan skyline as only a kayaker can see it. Support of the Circumnavigation has broadened to include several other NYC area organizations including New York City Water Trail Association, Inwood Canoe Club, Long Island City Community Boathouse, Village Community Boathouse, The Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse, Long Island Kayaking Enthusiasts, Waterfront Alliance,Long Island Paddlers and North Atlantic Canoe and Kayak (NACK). Insurance for the event is provided by the American Canoe Association.
The Circumnavigation is open to all who qualify based on their paddling abilities and experience. All participants must paddle a decked sea kayak 14’ or longer with sealed bulkheads and have open water experience. Specific qualification requirements are detailed in the application form. Club membership is not required and out-of-towners are welcome. Careful planning means that the tidal currents help rather than oppose the paddlers. Safety of the large group is enhanced via general marine radio use; safety boat and jet-ski escorts and Coast Guard notification.
